What is a Smoothie Bowl?
A smoothie bowl is a thicker version of a traditional smoothie that's made from blending frozen fruits in a high-speed blender or food processor.
Some smoothie bowl recipes use a splash of milk to blend the fruits together, but I like to use less liquids and opt for yogurt instead to ensure a thick consistency.
The other thing that sets a smoothie bowl apart from a regular smoothie is the TOPPINGS! Add any toppings you like from fruits and nuts to decadent chocolate chips.

Ingredients
This strawberry banana smoothie bowl recipe starts with a few basic ingredients -- bananas, strawberries, and yogurt. The rest is up to you!
Frozen strawberries. Frozen strawberries keep your strawberry smoothie bowl frozen and ice-cream-like. You can use pre-packaged frozen strawberries from the store or freeze your own.
Frozen bananas. Frozen bananas Peel, slice, and freeze your bananas when they are at the perfect eating ripeness. I always have a ziplock bag of frozen banana slices, so we can make smoothie bowls anytime.
Greek yogurt. Plain Greek yogurt helps the strawberry banana mixture blend together, and the swirl on top adds a touch of tang. You can also use strawberry, vanilla, or your favorite flavor of Greek yogurt in this smoothie bowl recipe.
Toppings. Just like building a sundae, your toppings options for your strawberry smoothie bowl are endless. This one has fresh strawberries, crushed graham crackers, mini chocolate chips, almonds, and a honey-cocoa drizzle.
Cocoa powder and honey. The chocolate drizzle on top is just cocoa powder and honey, and it tastes just like chocolate syrup, but there's no added sugar! I even use this mixture to make chocolate milk and hot chocolate!
Step-by-step instructions
Let the frozen strawberries thaw for about 10 minutes to soften them up a bit before blending.
Step 1
In a food processor or high-powered blender, add the strawberries, sliced banana, and ¼ cup plain Greek yogurt.
Process until it is smooth and creamy. You will have to stop and scrape down the sides several times to make sure everything gets blended together.
Note: The blender cup in this photo has a contraption inside that you turn while it blends to scrape down the sides. But you certainly don't need to use a blender cup like this. The regular blender or food processor pitcher will work just fine.
Step 2
Pour the strawberry and banana mixture into a bowl and add a swirl of the rest of the Greek yogurt.
Step 3
Concoct your perfect smoothie bowl creation with the toppings of your choice -- sliced fresh fruit, toasted nuts, chocolate chips, crushed graham crackers ... anything!
Step 4
Make the chocolate drizzle.
Mix 1 tablespoon of honey, 2 teaspoons of cocoa powder, and a little bit of warm water. Stir until it reaches your desired consistency and drizzle it over your strawberry smoothie bowl.

Expert Tips
Thaw who frozen strawberries for about 5-10 minutes, just to soften them up a bit. They’ll blend easier and more quickly this way.
To prepare your bananas to freeze, slice them and place them in a large zip-top bag. Lay the bag flat in the freezer so the bananas are in a single layer. Once they are frozen, they may be slightly frozen together, but you can break them apart and use them as needed.
Some smoothie bowls add a little liquid, like milk or almond milk. For a thick and creamy smoothie bowl, don’t add liquid. Choose something thicker like yogurt instead.
Smoothie bowls are always best when eaten right away. You can freeze them, but they become extremely hard — much firmer than ice cream — so you will just need to set them out on the counter for 10-20 minutes before digging in.
Recipe FAQs
To make a smoothie bowl that’s thick and creamy, be sure to use frozen bananas and opt for Greek yogurt instead of milk or almond milk. You can also skip the yogurt altogether and, in time, your blender will turn just frozen fruit smooth and creamy.
Yes, a smoothie bowl is typically made with less liquid than a regular smoothie so it has a thicker consistency and can be eaten with a spoon.
A regular blender may not be powerful enough to break down the hard frozen fruit and whip it into the creamy soft-serve consistency of a smoothie bowl. I recommend a high-speed blender or food processor when making smoothie bowls.
