Ingredients
So, what is taco seasoning made of? These are some of the key ingredients. See the recipe card for the full list of ingredients.
Chili powder adds that familiar smoky, slightly spicy Southwestern flavor to taco seasoning. It’s also delicious in chili, meat rubs, and pasta sauces.
Cumin is an earthy, warm seasoning with a slightly nutty flavor. I love a little bit of it sprinkled on this mango salsa.
Paprika is sweet and mildly peppery. Some varieties of paprika may be smoky or spicy.
Onion powder adds mild onion flavor
Garlic powder is dehydrated garlic and has a less assertive flavor than fresh garlic
Oregano is subtly sweet and herbaceous
✔️Tip: For the best flavor, be sure to use fresh spices. Check the expiration date on the spices from your cabinet to ensure they are still good.
Variations
Spicy: This mild version of taco seasoning is pretty tame. If you are looking for something with a little heat, use spicy chili powder or add red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper.
Less salt: Adjust the sodium level to meet your needs by reducing or eliminating the salt.
